#507 Coconut Shell Nativity

Acquired 2008

The second set Janine chose for me from the Washington D. C. Cathedral is this darling coconut item that was crafted in the mountains of Haiti. Graduates of Abricot native village mountain schools make crafts to be marketed in the United States for their living, including this nativity. In this set, the stable is cleverly carved out of a coconut shell with the 14 ceramic figures standing at 1 ½ to 2 inches tall. This coconut nativity was displayed on a dark lacquered wood tray and was not a part of the nativity. Janine told the clerk, “Oh my, the tray is not a part of it? - Got to have the tray” and it was added to the set. The tray is crafted in Honduras. Nativity purchase price, $54.95; the wood tray, $14.95.
