#787 Philippine Bean Bag

Acquired 2017

This is a roly-poly fun set of six bean bags marketed by another fair-traded company, Ten Thousand Villages. The pieces are divided by three - Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus are made from a bright colorful cloth typical of their culture. The three kings are each a different satin color. Combined, the set creates the brightness of color array of their culture. The story of these rollicking pieces from the Philippines takes me to the Bethlehem Nativity Convention. Vendors and attendees are asked to donate something for the silent auction table. Therefore, as I gazed across the auction items, my eye caught this fun set, and I started bidding on it. The auction spanned two days and I kept checking to see if I was in the running and found I had to up it each time! In that the money is a donation to our nativity organization, Friends of the Creche, I bid $60. I was gone to lunch with friends in old Bethlehem when the auction closed. It was that evening, when the auction winners were posted that I found out “I got it!” What I didn't know that my dear friend, Sue Parker, whom I was having lunch with, donated it, and paid $30 for the set. So, my $60 covered $30 for the bean bags and $30 for a donation! All is well. Won in the auction, October 2017.
