#410 Mount St. Helens Volcanic Ash Nativity

Acquired 2005

Pennie shared this nativity with me when she visited Pikes Place Market in downtown Seattle, WA January 2005. Mt. St Helens, in Washington, a dormant volcano, massively erupted on May 18, 1980, changing the terrain around it forever. The forces of the eruption are still visible in this, the 24th year after the violent eruption. With this nativity, the creator has tried to show respect to the eruption by using materials and minerals from the still existent ash to create mementos of this historical event. This hand-crafted piece was designed and then cast in a unique and complicated process involving 15 steps. From Evergreen Art Studios, Seattle, WA.
