#784 Seashell Nativity
Acquired 2017This very delicate seashell nativity is made by Jim Ridlen, from Prosperity, South Carolina, whom I met at the Bethlehem, PA Nativity Convention. He personally collects almost all the shells used in his pieces from the South Carolina shores of the Atlantic. (He did say that he had to buy some of the pieces to create enough sets to have available at the convention!) The Baby Jesus in each of his sets is the state stone of South Carolina - the Blue Granite igneous stone. The stone is basically a gray or gray/blue color with speckles. The two trees used as a background to Mary and Joseph are carefully cut with a special saw. The abalone stable backdrop and starfish add the finishing touches to this very delicate piece. Purchase price, $25. October 2017.
