#176 Celtic Nativity

Acquired 1997

So rare and unique, I have eyed this set for a couple of years and added it to my collection, November 1997. From a few different historical type catalogs, I purchased this set through Art & Artifact for $162.95. In ninth-century Ireland, Celtic monks expressed their faith and illustrated Biblical stories by carving magnificent High Crosses with scenes from the life of Christ. One of these primitive yet powerful works of art is the source for this unique nativity set, individually cast in limestone to resemble the hand-chiseled originals. A gothic arch fragment evokes the inn as visitors surround the Holy Family. Hand cast by Kieran Forde Crafts and imported from Ireland, the set includes 11 pieces up to 9” high.
