#573 Kindles Nativity

Acquired 2011

While visiting the Bavarian Style town of Leavenworth, WA in July 2011, I stumbled across this nativity Set in the Alpen Haus gift store. It was the only nativity in the store and happened to be in a locked case towards the back of the store! Of course, I had to ask the clerk about it. From her I learned about a new line of collectibles that I have seen but never paid much attention to. The line is Carolers from Buyer's Choice. These folk- styled brightly warm colored treasures are prominent at Christmas time having started with Christmas carolers in 1965. Mrs. Joyce Buyers made her unique pieces for friends and family in the beginning. After her husband, Bob Buyers, lost his job and had too much time on his hands, he decided to “show off” his wife's creative pieces and people wanted to buy them! That's all it took to start a business that has grown to a multi-million-dollar line of precious pieces. In 2005, Joyce Buyers released a smaller variation of the carolers, calling them Kindle. My set is her only release of the nativity in the Kindle line. The set I purchased from Alpen Haus was a set they had in stock from 2007. While Evey found the set on the internet at $350, I paid, $170!The ten-piece set includes Joseph, Mary who holds Baby Jesus, a stable, a shepherd with two sheep, a camel, and the three wise men. There is an angel that can be added to the set. I will have to find one!
