#19 Lladro Set
Acquired 1989I began collecting this set in 1989. It began at Christmas time with Keith & Lisa Shepardson giving me a Lladro angel. At that time, I had no concept of what Lladro pieces were and as I learned of their significance, I was overtaken by the challenge to collect the nativity set. Lladro pieces are designed and made in Spain. That Christmas, my husband purchased for me the basic set in the children's theme.Mary, $70Joseph, $85Baby Jesus, $45In 1990, Bob added one king. In 1990, I visited Merksamer's Jewelers in the mall and learned that Lladro has several different nativities sets and that mine is the Children's set. This figurine set is all children as portraying the Christmas story. I learned that the kings all hold children's toys. The king I already had holds a truck and was priced at $90.During the summer of 1991, in another visit to Merksamer's Jewelers, I learned there were a few unusual pieces to this Child's set which are hard to get. Therefore, he special-ordered these pieces for me from New York. Those pieces included:Boy with a lamb, $85Girl with a basket, $80Girl with a chicken, $80The remaining pieces Bob & I found in the Cayman Islands, at the Kirk Freeport Plaza, during our 30th anniversary cruise on the Royal Caribbean, Song of America. At a reduced rate, I purchased:Balthasar Black King with Teddy Bear, $63Melchor Small King with Gift, $63Gaspar Tall King with Car, $63Donkey, $76Cow, $62The total Children's Nativity is 11 pieces and the total cost to me was $799. The angel is a separate piece from this set but blends in very well.
