#509 India Nativity

Acquired 2008

Bob and I visited Sedona, Arizona, for our first time, with Bob's sister, Mary Jo, and her husband Leon, along with Sonny, Bob's brother, and his wife Dee. We all stayed with Mary Jo and Leon at their timeshare in late April 2008. While there we toured the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a huge Catholic Chapel that has been built right into the red rock of Sedona. It was an awesome experience to climb up and be in the chapel as it is one of the main attractions of the area. Underneath the chapel in the red rock was their gift shop which I had to visit! Joyfully, I spotted several nativities! Making quick choices was imperative because I had my family waiting at the top of the hill. But I am an expert at quick nativity decisions and my talent didn't fail me! Looking for something unusual brought me to choose this set from India. Hand-formed metal is the foundation of this set, and you can tell it is from India just by observing the artwork and design. All the iron is left in its natural state with imperfections such as rust, orange streaks, and marks remaining in the metal. Most are covered in that the ten pieces have been hand painted. To protect the metal, I have sealed it with a coating of lacquer to keep it as elegant as I have purchased it. The set includes four animals, Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus with a crown around his head, and the three kings bearing their gifts. Purchased April 2008 - purchase price, $110.
